Knowing your stuff.
There
is little worse than finding mistakes in a story. Readers get
frustrated when anatomy isn't correct, when the foreign language used
is not used properly or when conclusions made just plain wrong! A
story is a work of art, and as such you need to know your content.
Google is your best friend!
Want to write a murder mystery? Research your poisons! Research your guns! How does one treat a gunshot wound? How long does it take an average man of 6 foot 5 to bleed out? I don't know, look it up!
Want to use colour symbolism in your story, you'd best be sure of what you're referring to, else it might cause a whole lot confusion.
Want to write a ghost story? You'd best be sure of the different kinds of haunting or how one might be manifested.
Do some research, read some stories to amplify your own. Make a file and jot down your research however you see fit. As long as I can understand what you've searched for and if you found what you needed everything will do. But beware, proper research does not end after the first link!

Example!
Researching the meaning behind the colour ivory. Within five minutes I've found several quotes and statements regarding the colour and a nice schematic which depicts colours that would compliment it. Now I can use the word and colour ivory to draw parallels or describe exactly what I want because I now know what the colour means to others and what it is associated with. |

Researching poisons! I started out researching the most deadly poisons but later arrived at Deadly nightshade. Within mere minutes I looked up enough information to make a decent reference to the substance and do it justice as a plot device.
